Position Overview

The campus-based elementary or middle school Scholar Support Coordinator is primarily responsible for ensuring that scholars with special needs receive the academic, emotional, and physical services necessary to thrive at Achievement Prep. This individual is part of a team that includes related service providers, psychologists, social workers, administrators and teachers who work collaboratively to identify and provide for scholars with special needs.

   

Reports to: Director of Scholar Support

 

Supervises & Evaluates: Dedicated Aides

 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assessing and Planning for Scholars

  • Perform educational assessment of scholars, including observations; review the scholars’ educational histories; confer with the scholars’ teachers; and evaluate and analyze scholars’ academic performance and learning characteristics
  • Actively participate in deliberations and classification of educationally disabled scholars and assist in the planning of Individual Educational Programs (IEP)
  • Assist in the identification of all types of exceptional scholars within the school
  • Assess overall progress of special education instruction on campus and address areas in need of improvement

Staff Support

  • Work directly with teachers to differentiate instruction to meet the needs and goals of scholars with special needs and/or who are struggling academically
  • Consult with appropriate staff directly responsible for implementation of IEPs for special education scholars
  • Serves as resource and/or consultant to staff on the nature, causes, and solutions to learning challenges of scholars
  • Research, plan and coordinate in-service training for administrators, parents, teachers, etc. in understanding and meeting the needs of special education scholars

Oversight and Compliance

  • Schedule, coordinate, and chair team meetings
  • Report educational assessment findings during meetings, as appropriate
  • Assist in coordinating, developing, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of IEPs
  • Act as a liaison with all of a scholar’s teachers to ensure the implementation of the established IEP of an assigned scholar
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date confidential records on all referred scholars and scholar/parent contacts in accordance with federal and District law, Board policy and the procedure of Achievement Prep’s special education program
  • Provide thorough and timely reports, data, and information, as requested

Maintenance of School and Organizational Culture

  • Fully integrate into the school community and assume additional school-wide responsibilities to ensure a strong culture
  • Collaborate with staff to advance the school’s mission and communicate that mission to its constituents
  • Adhere to and enforce school-wide protocols and policies
  • Actively pursue professional development opportunities, inside and outside of the school
  • Assume extracurricular responsibilities, if desired

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree (required); Master’s degree (preferred)
  • Achievement of NCLB “Highly Qualified” standard
  • 3+ years of special education teaching experience
  • Certification or degree in special education
  • Experience working in urban schools (2+ years preferred)
